On March 22 at 19:00, science journalist and popularizer Asya Kazantseva will give a lecture in Bishkek for the first time: "How to Make Yourself Walk More (and Should You?)"

A Brief Overview of the Benefits and Challenges of Bipedalism

Humans became bipedal before they became intelligent. Otherwise, they might have reconsidered! Walking upright—especially in combination with a large brain—makes childbirth significantly more difficult, contributes to a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, and creates specific challenges for circulation under Earth's gravity.

At the same time, now that we've learned to walk, we should keep doing it—all the time. And not just for physical health, but for mental well-being. People who walk for long distances, especially through scenic landscapes, switch into a special mode of attention that helps restore emotional balance, organize accumulated information, and generate new ideas.

These effects are strong enough to be of serious interest to researchers, and a substantial body of data has already been collected on where, how, and how much one should walk to be both smart and happy. Arm yourself with this knowledge in advance to make the most of your summer evenings—and choose comfortable shoes, because after this lecture, you're definitely going to want to walk home.
