On May 7th in New York, a unique lecture will be delivered by one of the world’s leading experts on North Korea – Pr. Andrei Lankov.

North Korea has existed for almost 80 years, and throughout its history, there have been persistent predictions that this state was supposedly on the brink of collapse. Yet, these forecasts have proven incorrect: the North Korean state has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Moreover, in recent years it appears that North Korea has emerged from the prolonged crisis it endured for nearly a quarter of a century. Of course, a "black swan" event could happen at any moment, but overall, it seems that both the ruling Kim family and their entourage (also largely hereditary) can now look to the future with some degree of optimism.

In this lecture, we will discuss the objective factors that have made North Korean statehood so enduring. We will also analyze the policies implemented by the North Korean leadership, which undoubtedly play a significant role in ensuring the survival of the state in its current form. We will explore the challenges facing Pyongyang and why it responds (and likely will continue to respond) to these challenges so effectively.

Finally, we will talk about those aspects in which North Korea's leadership has simply been fortunate. However, it's worth remembering: if the members of the ruling Kim family were confronted with remarks about their good luck, they could sarcastically reply using Suvorov’s famous saying, "Luck is luck, but one also needs skill."
