The Enigma of Artificial Intelligence

Tuesday 27. May at 19:00 - 22:00

Queen Mary University of London

Artificial Intelligence is already all around us — in our phones, the news, and social media filters. But how does it actually work?

The lecture “The Enigma of Artificial Intelligence” is a lively, engaging, and accessible journey into the world of AI. No technical background needed — just a clear and captivating explanation. Perfect for anyone curious about AI, from inquisitive teenagers to adults in the humanities. Everything is explained in simple terms.

Together, we’ll trace the path from early 20th-century experiments and the Turing test to today’s large language models. You’ll learn how computers learned to recognize speech, translate text, play chess — and whether any of this can truly be called “thinking.”

This isn’t your typical “chalkboard lecture” — it’s a science show. You’ll see how a neural network works in real time, take part in quizzes, polls, and discussions. And of course, you’ll be able to ask any questions — from “What is an algorithm?” to “How does ChatGPT work?”

Mikhail Burtsev is a scientist, science communicator, and charismatic speaker. An expert in neural networks, dialogue systems, and evolutionary algorithms, he works at the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences. He has authored over 80 scientific publications and has organized international AI competitions. But most importantly — Mikhail has a gift for making complex topics understandable and exciting.

The event will be held in Russian in London on May 27 at 19:00 in Queen Mary University of London, Graduate Center, Peston Lecture theatre.

Doors open at 18:30.
