Tours of the Prado Museum with Tamara Eidelman

Tuesday 12. August at 09:00 - Wednesday 13. August at 11:00

Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Two Special Mornings at the Prado with Tamara Eidelman

On both days we’ll meet at 9 AM — before the museum opens to the public.
Accompanied by Tamara Eidelman, you’ll walk through the galleries dedicated to two of the greatest Spanish painters — Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez and Francisco José de Goya.

August 12, 09:00–10:30 — Tour of the Diego Velázquez Galleries

Velázquez is one of my very favorite artists. And the Prado is one of my very favorite museums in the world. One of the things I enjoy most is sharing with others what I personally love and find fascinating.

And so, dear friends, I invite all who are interested to join me on August 12 at 9 AM, when the museum is still closed, to walk through the Prado’s galleries that house a stunning collection of Velázquez’s paintings — and to listen to my story about Velázquez himself, about 17th-century Spain, and about the remarkable fate of this country.

Come join me!

August 13, 09:00–10:30 — Tour of the Francisco Goya Galleries

Friends, are there any among you who love the paintings of Goya?

Goya entered my life, strangely enough, before I ever saw his paintings — when, as a child, I read Lion Feuchtwanger’s novel Goya, or the Hard Way to Enlightenment, and later watched the astonishing film adaptation, in which Donatas Banionis portrayed the great artist. I had almost nowhere to see Goya’s works — there was only one painting in the entire USSR, in the Hermitage, donated by Armand Hammer in exchange for the right to conduct his murky business in Russia. No one knew then that two more Goya paintings were hidden away in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

Of course, there were reproductions, there were books. But still — that first visit to the Prado, and the first moment I stepped into the Goya galleries — will forever remain with me as a powerful, magical, and also deeply unsettling memory.

So now, if you love Goya, I invite you to join me for a tour of the Prado. On August 13 at 9 AM, when the museum is still closed, we’ll walk through the galleries where his paintings are exhibited — first full of joy and the vibrant colors of life, and then increasingly dark and haunting.

Come join me!
