A Special Day at the National Gallery with Tamara Eidelman
The collection of paintings at the National Gallery is so stunning and diverse that one can enjoy it endlessly — and discover something new each time. I am particularly fond of the galleries featuring Renaissance art, because here one can clearly see the path through which world culture came to understand humanity.
I have visited this museum many times with my students, and we would slowly walk along the paintings, each of which is a whole world. We observed how the exquisite Madonnas of the late Middle Ages gave way to equally beautiful but entirely new Madonnas by Raphael or Perugino. We gazed at the faces of the Arnolfini couple painted by van Eyck and imagined their lives, were struck by the luminous whiteness of Piero della Francesca’s Baptism, and finally paused before Leonardo to witness an entire Universe before our eyes.
Paintings from the 13th–15th centuries reveal humanity step by step in all its splendor and contradictions, leaving the impression that each image contains a whole world of feelings and thoughts.
On December 10th at 11:00, I invite you to join me for a walk through the National Gallery, a journey from the Middle Ages to the High Renaissance, and to discover what the great masters have to tell us about ourselves.
