THERE IS NO EVIL Persian Film Fest Screening
Thursday 22. January at 20:00 - 22:40
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
Proudly presented as part of our extended Persian Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema.
Mohammad Rasoulof | 2020 | Iran | 150 minutes | original Persian audio with English subtitles| There will be a brief 10 minute intermission around the halfway point
THERE IS NO EVIL comprises four interconnected stories, each examining the moral consequences of capital punishment in Iran. Ordinary people are shown confronting decisions tied to executions carried out in the name of the state (or more accurately, the Islamic Republic). The film focuses not on victims, but on those who must participate in this broken, wretched system to survive.
The film belongs to the third wave of the Persian New Wave and was made under extreme pressure. Rasoulof was banned from filmmaking and later imprisoned. Despite this, the film was completed in secret and smuggled out of Iran. (This is something of a common theme amongst the films we're presenting this week.)
After winning the Golden Bear top prize at the Berlin Film Festival, THERE IS NO EVIL became one of the most significant political films to emerge from Iran in recent years. It exposes how the IGRC's authoritarian system forces citizens to make moral compromises, and distributes this responsibility across every strata of society ensuring it's survival.
