FURTHER AND FURTHER is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

This special screening will be followed by a live Q&A with director Tanya Chekhova, who will be travelling from Germany to join us in FOMO to discuss the film and take questions from the audience.

FURTHER AND FURTHER is an intimate documentary filmed over several years by Tanya Chekhova, who turns her camera toward her own family at a moment of political rupture. At its center is her grandfather, Professor Vladimir Fridkin, a renowned Russian physicist in his nineties, living in Moscow as the country moves deeper into isolation and authoritarian control. What begins as a portrait of an aging scientist gradually becomes a study of generational divide, exile, and the cost of political belief.

Chekhova, born in Moscow and now based in Berlin, left Russia in 2021. That distance shapes the film. Conversations between granddaughter and grandfather unfold across apartments, kitchens and quiet rooms, often circling around the war in Ukraine and the widening gulf between their worldviews. The film resists argument for spectacle. Instead, it records hesitation, affection, frustration and silence. The tension lies not in confrontation, but in what cannot be reconciled.

Premiering on the European festival circuit, the film has been recognized for its clear eyed look at how large political events fracture private lives. Its strength comes from proximity. The camera is not observing strangers. It is part of the family.

FURTHER AND FURTHER sits naturally within INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK as an example of documentary filmmaking rooted in personal risk and moral clarity. It asks what it means to love someone whose convictions no longer align with your own, and how far history can pull people apart before something breaks.
