SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.
Made for roughly 175,000 dollars and shot in black and white on the streets of Brooklyn, SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT announced Spike Lee as a bold new voice in American independent cinema. The film centers on Nola Darling, a young woman navigating relationships with three very different men while refusing to conform to their expectations. What might sound like a romantic comedy quickly reveals itself as a direct challenge to sexual double standards and male entitlement. Lee mixes handheld street realism with theatrical monologues and stylized interviews, creating a film that feels both intimate and confrontational.
Watch it now and you can already see the foundations of DO THE RIGHT THING in the way Spike Lee captures neighborhood tension and street level conversation. You can also see the ambition that would later power MALCOLM X in his insistence on centering Black perspective without apology. Even in this debut, Lee is not experimenting timidly. He's staking out territory he tread time and time again in future.
SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT became a cultural and financial breakthrough, grossing over 7 million dollars and proving that a self financed Black independent film could reach a national audience. Its success helped energize what would become a new wave of Black independent filmmaking in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Seen today, the film still feels alive, argumentative and modern. Its independence is not just about budget, but about authorship and voice. That spirit sits naturally at the heart of INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK.
