DADDY LONGLEGS Safdie Brothers - FOMO Indi Film Fest
Saturday 7. March at 17:00 - 18:45
FOMO Secret Cinema
Josh Safdie & Benny Safdie | 2009 | USA | 1h40m | English language with English subtitles
DADDY LONGLEGS is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.
Before GOOD TIME and UNCUT GEMS pushed the Safdie Brothers into international recognition, DADDY LONGLEGS introduced their chaotic, intimate vision of New York life. Shot on a modest budget with a skeletal crew and a mix of non-professional performers, the film follows Lenny, a divorced projectionist trying to juggle two young sons during his custody weeks. He is charming, reckless, loving, irresponsible and impossible to categorize.
What makes DADDY LONGLEGS so compelling is its proximity. The handheld camera rarely gives Lenny space. Arguments feel overheard rather than staged. The city feels lived in rather than designed. If you experienced the emotional volatility of MARTY SUPREME at FOMO recently, you can trace its DNA back to this earlier work. The Safdies’ fascination with flawed men on the brink, with love expressed through chaos, begins here.
The film was not a commercial hit, but it marked the Safdies as filmmakers committed to psychological intensity and moral discomfort. They refuse to smooth their characters into heroes or villains. Instead, they force us to sit with contradiction.
Seen within INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK, DADDY LONGLEGS reminds us that independence often means embracing instability. This is a film that feels discovered rather than manufactured.
