How to sauna the Estonian way - Saturday 25 May 2019

Sat 25. May 2019 at 14:00 - 17:00

Heldeke! · Tööstuse 13, Tallinn, Estonia

'How to sauna the Estonian way' is hosted by Anni Oviir and Adam Rang every Saturday afternoon (starting in May) at Tallinn's most creative new sauna. You'll learn how the sauna helped shape Estonia today, as well as how Estonian history shaped the designs and traditions of the sauna over thousands of years. Most importantly, you'll get to enjoy a sauna too and taste delicious Estonian food and drink!

Anni and Adam, like most Estonians, love going to saunas. Over the past few years, they've travelled around Estonia and the world together to experience the weirdest and most wonderful saunas they can find. Along the way, they opened a smoke sauna in Tallinn, competed in Estonia's sauna marathons, and became the first people to both start a company while having a sauna and vote in national elections while having a sauna. They've also featured regularly in international media coverage to promote Estonia as a sauna destination.

Heldeke! is a new underground theatre and bar that is also home to Tallinn's coolest sauna (although not literally). The venue itself has its own colourful and controversial place in sauna history, which is revealed when exploring the longer story of sauna culture in Estonia. The sauna has 'home rules', which means swimming clothes are optional and women are welcome to go in separately when they wish. The bar is well stocked with interesting Estonian drinks you are welcome to purchase, including a wide selection of alcohol-free options, while food is already included in the experience. Towels are allowed in the bar/theatre area and drinks are allowed in the sauna. There's even a working piano if you want to put on your own entertainment!
