Weekend walk with Arkadiy Gershman in Berlin

Sunday 26. July at 13:00 - 15:00

Wasserturm Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

Berlin through the eyes of an urbanist: the history and present of the world's first metropolis

In the 19th century, Berlin unexpectedly became the capital of the new German Empire. Economic boom, industrialization, and technical progress required transforming a medieval city into a modern metropolis in just a few decades. And Berlin successfully coped with this task, although for this it was often necessary to invent new solutions right along the way.

Here you can still see urban solutions invented more than a hundred years ago, many of which continue to work successfully today. And during a walk through Prenzlauer Berg, we will analyze how the modern city was formed and why some ideas survive decades, while others become obsolete almost immediately after implementation.

This is not a tourist excursion with an endless stream of dates and a listing of famous personalities. Instead, we will look at the city as a complex mechanism: we will analyze the layout of streets and quarters, talk about housing, transport, and public spaces, as well as how the decisions of the 19th century received a new interpretation in our time.

During the walk you will learn:
— why the Berlin tile became the face of the city and what church attire has to do with it;
— how already in the 19th century industrial and typical housing construction originated in Berlin;
— what contemporaries criticized Prenzlauer Berg for and why today this area is considered one of the most attractive for living;
— how urban solutions of the past help to understand the problems and challenges of modern cities.

The walk is suitable both for those interested in urbanism, architecture, and the history of the city, and for those who just want to look at Berlin in a new way.

The walk will be led by Arkady Gershman – a well-known urbanist and author of the "City for People" project.
