Tallinn Baroque Orchestra, Chamber Choir Collegium Musicale with soloists present Johann Valentin Meder’s St. Matthew Passion.

Johann Valentin Meder (1649–1719), who worked also in Tallinn for nearly ten years, composed the piece in a predominantly simple and illustrative style. At the same time, it brings a dramatic expressiveness to Lutheran church music, influenced by opera. St. Matthew Passion, composed in early 18th-century Riga, is one of the most remarkable early passion oratorios before the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

On stage:
Tallinna Baroque Orchestra (artistic director Egmont Välja)
Chamber Choir Collegium Musicale
Endrik Üksvärav (Evangelist)
Olari Viikholm (Jesus)

The concert takes place in collaboration with the Tallinn Philharmonic Society.
