For the first time, an Iranian table is coming to Socialoftas.
On 16 October, Asal is taking over the kitchen and bringing some of the food, flavours and rituals of an Iranian home to our table.
This isn't a tasting or a restaurant night. We're doing what How We Dine Is How We Live has always been about: sitting down together, passing food around, meeting people we didn't arrive with, and letting a culture be encountered around a table rather than explained from a distance.
And this time, there is quite a table waiting for us.
To welcome you
A lightly saffron-scented Persian sharbat with basil seeds.
To begin
Mirza Ghasemi — smoky aubergine with tomatoes, garlic and eggs, served with bread.
For the table
Ghormeh Sabzi — slow-cooked beef, herbs and beans with dried lime.
Chicken Tahchin — golden saffron rice with chicken and barberries.
Shirazi salad — cucumber, tomato, onion, dill and citrus.
Something sweet
Sholeh Zard — Persian saffron rice pudding.
Asal's homemade baklava, served with cinnamon tea.
And after dinner, we're not going home just yet.
Asal will introduce us to Esm-o Famil, a word game loved at Iranian family gatherings. We'll play a few rounds together, including one with an Iranian twist, hear some of the stories behind the answers and, apparently, determine three very serious champions.
There will be prizes. Edible ones.
Bring your appetite and your imagination!
Come alone if you like. That's never been a problem in our living room.
