Description
On 10 October at 6 p.m., the Arvo Pärt Centre will host an extraordinary concert in its concert hall, where Ensemble U: will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of American composer Morton Feldman with a performance of his monumental work For Philip Guston. Morton Feldman (1926–1987) was one of the most influential innovators of 20th-century avant-garde music. His work is characterised by extremely quiet sound colours, a slow sense of time, and an intense focus on the duration of sound. Rather than striving towards traditional drama or climax, his music creates a meditative listening experience that demands an intense sense of presence from the listener.

Completed in 1971, For Philip Guston is one of the most important works of Feldman’s late period. It is dedicated to the American painter Philip Guston, whose work deeply inspired the composer. Lasting approximately four hours, the piece for flute, piano and percussion unfolds through slowly changing patterns, repetition, silence and delicate sound colours. At its centre is sound itself – its texture, duration and almost imperceptible changes, which create a hypnotic and deeply concentrated sonic world. Just as in Guston’s paintings, meaning in Feldman’s music emerges through subtle shifts and an attentive focus on detail.

Ensemble U: is one of Estonia’s leading contemporary music ensembles, having introduced audiences to some of the most distinctive developments in 20th- and 21st-century music for more than two decades. The ensemble is known for its adventurous programmes, high-level musicianship, and open and experimental approach, bringing together classics of contemporary music, new works, improvisation and interdisciplinary projects. Collaboration with both Estonian and international composers plays a central role in the ensemble’s activities, and Ensemble U: frequently gives world premieres of their works. The ensemble has performed at numerous international festivals and is so far the only Estonian ensemble to have participated in the Venice Music Biennale.

This rare concert offers a unique opportunity to experience the timeless quality of Feldman’s musical language and to immerse oneself for four hours in an extraordinary world of sound, time and listening.
