Thursday 10. February 2022 at 18:00 - 19:00 EET
Online
On Thursday, 10th February, a series of lectures covering cultural, artistic and historical topics will begin at the Narva Museum.
The first lecture will be held in English, the others will be offered mainly in Estonian and Russian this season (another lecture in English will also take place in April). The lectures will be accompanied by translation of slides and supporting materials, which participants will be able to obtain on the spot.
The COVID-19 restrictions have fundamentally changed the way we live. Last year, the Narva Museum, following the global trend of distance learning, launched an ambitious experiment with a series of virtual lectures. Thanks to the new format, everyone was able to attend a cycle of lectures and to take part in discussions without leaving home.
During pandemic time, the Narva Museum proved to be a major non-formal learning centre for a wide audience, and this year is also seeking to satisfy the thirst for knowledge by offering new opportunities. Since February lectures will be held at least twice a month on Thursdays. Lectures are held both on site and via Zoom.
Registration and purchase of tickets takes place on the site Fienta.com
James White (The University of Tartu) "Attempts to convert Swedish population of Ruhnu island".
Date & time: 10.02.2022 at 6pm
Language: English
Format: ZOOM lecture
Price: Free of charge
Over the summer of 1866, the Swedish-speaking population on the lonely isle of Ruhnu sought conversion from Lutheranism to Russian Orthodoxy. Fishing, trading and hunting all around the Baltic Sea, these islanders had a highly distinctive culture, dialect, and way of life. However, a valuable shipwreck soured their relations with their local Lutheran pastor and led them to threaten conversion to the faith of the tsar. In this talk, we will use the authentic voices of the involved individuals to tell this dramatic story of religious conflict amidst the waves of the Baltic.
A link to ZOOM Lektoorium will be sent to registered participants one hour before the start of the event.
