Ida-Virumaa kaevandusmuuseumi ja Sillamäe ekskursioon - bussiga Tallinnast 14.05.2026

Discover Estonia’s mining history on a guided tour at the Estonian mining museum. Explore underground tunnels, see original mining equipment, and ride an authentic underground train.

Join a day trip from Tallinn (the bus journey begins in Tallinn) to the Estonian Mining Museum and the charming coastal town of Sillamäe.

Discover the museum’s underground passages and experience the rich historical heritage of the region. Enjoy a guided bus excursion accompanied by a local guide.

Descend 8 meters underground to explore a network of mining tunnels. Equipped with a helmet, coat, and lamp, you will experience firsthand what working conditions were like for miners, see original equipment, and ride the same underground train once used by miners.

Above ground, the Enrichment Plant exhibition explains the process of oil shale energy production and provides insight into the future of energy generation. The museum features interactive exhibitions and educational programs covering the history and technology of mining, making the visit engaging for guests of all ages.

Afterwards, there will be a short stop in the charming seaside town of Sillamäe. Walk through the town and hear stories about the unique character of the Ida-Viru region. In the 19th century, Sillamäe was a popular resort town visited by notable figures such as composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and physiologist Ivan Pavlov. During the Soviet era, however, the town became closed and did not even appear on maps, as it was home to a uranium enrichment plant that played a role in the Soviet Union’s nuclear program.

The town was built in the Stalinist neoclassical style, giving Sillamäe a distinctive architectural character. One of its main attractions is Mere Boulevard and its seaside promenade. From the town square, a grand staircase leads down to the sea, where a historic gazebo stands among classical buildings. The promenade offers beautiful views of the Gulf of Finland and features relaxation areas, children’s playgrounds, and an outdoor gym.

After the walking tour, you will have time to enjoy a lunch break at a local restaurant (meal at an additional cost). The bus then returns to Tallinn, arriving in the afternoon.
