Getriin Kotsar "Atlas"

Kanuti Gildi SAAL, Tallinn

They stand at the center of the world, serving as the measure for everything around them. They seek clarity — asking how to reduce the complexity of the objects being mapped, how to create order out of chaos. They know that an ideal map is free of ambiguity. A good map shows precise distances, clear directions, and topographical truth. Yet, human beings are three-dimensional and inherently ambiguous, no map is neutral. Whoever wishes to create an ideal map must abandon the idea of being objective about the world around them.

They call themselves cartographers. Their task is to overwrite the past and correct errors, to make adjustments, to shape a new narrative, and to create "the map of maps". They select the objects to be marked, making choices that always serve the creation of the ideal map — even when doing so constricts someone’s boundaries, digs up gardens, or drains rivers. Whoever wishes to create an ideal map must realize that they are quietly, yet steadfastly, rewriting history.

At the heart of “Atlas” are three people whose actions on stage are shaped by personal and collective psychogeographical experiences, memories, and dreams. Their starting point is mapping as the most objective form of documentation. They consciously seize control, aiming to create a “new map” that serves simultaneously as a fair act of archiving and as a prophecy for future generations. The trio, driven by the desire to tame a world increasingly fractured and in conflict, takes the reins and sets about the structured work of building a better future.

Getriin Kotsar is a freelance artist and writer. She mostly works with themes like memories, passage of time and individual/collective loneliness. Most of her work, both performative and literary, derives from dreams, pop culture, human body and everyday life. As an artist, she thrives to create atmospheres and spaces, which are melancholy and liminal, yet aesthetically pleasing and offer a sense of security. In her works she tries to balance the fine line of fiction and real life, structure the chaos and in addition dreams of better opportunities for freelance artists.
