A 48-year-oldliterature professor, Leda, travels alone to a seaside resort where she becomes fascinated by a young mother Nina and her daughter, who arrive accompanied by their loud and intrusive family. Disturbed by the intensely intimate bond between mother and child, Leda is overwhelmed by contradicting feelings and vivid memories of her own daughters. An irrational act forces her to confront the unconventional choices she made as a young mother.
Adapted from the novel La Figlia Oscura (2006) by Elena Ferrante, the performance explores, often with a brutal precision, the subtle friction of parental relationships and our struggle to repress the acts that have shaped us.
Moving beyond idealized representations of motherhood, it reveals its darker territories in a style true to Ferrante’s universe, multi-layered and poetic.
Kati Kuisma's adaptation, directed by Johanna Freundlich, draws us into Leda's inner world through a solo performance by Terhi Suorlahti. This labyrinthine journey is heightened by Lucie Kuropatová's scenography, Pekka Pitkänen's lighting, and Riku Niemi's music.
Elena Ferrante’s novels have sold over 15 million copies worldwide in 45 languages and the TV adaptation of My Brilliant Friend turned her into a literary sensation. The Lost Daughter, one of her early novels, was adapted for the screen by Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2021 to widespread critical acclaim. This production marks its first European stage adaptation.
