Kuradi lood (The Devil’s Stories) is a visually expressive stage production by the Tartu University Theatre that reinterprets Estonian folk narratives through a synthesis of physical theatre, clowning, and elements inspired by Japanese kabuki aesthetics.
The performance explores the figure of the Devil not as a folkloric caricature, but as a shape-shifting manipulator operating through deceptive “contractual” logic. At the core lies the motif of selling one’s soul — ambiguous agreements, wordplay, and short-term gain at the cost of long-term loss. The production draws parallels between traditional tales of cunning bargains and contemporary forms of manipulation in the digital age.
