Willow tit survey training - NTS Threave Nature Reserve
Threave Nature Reserve, National Trust for Scotland, Castle Douglas
Help safeguard the Willow tit population in the Ken Dee Valley - Join us for a morning of survey training for Willow tit at NTS Threave Nature Reserve
The red-listed Willow tit is now the most rapidly declining resident bird species in the UK. Declines are associated with loss and fragmentation of suitable habitat, competition with other species, predation and climate change. Dumfries and Galloway is a remaining stronghold for the species within Scotland.
Aiming to safeguard the future of Willow tits in the Ken-Dee valley a working group was established in late 2024 of local staff from D&G Woodlands, RSPB, NTS, and the Loch Ken Trust. The group are now collaborating to gather data on locations of Willow tit populations in the environs of Loch Ken and south to Carlingwalk Loch. The data gathered will help us prioritise suitable sites for habitat creation and enhancement, connect populations together, and to engage landowners to make this a reality.
The survey training will teach you everything you need to know for surveying Willow tit, so you can assist with the gathering of this essential data between mid February and mid-April 2026.
The training event is held at NTS Threave Nature Reserve, thanks to the support of the NTS Ranger team. We'll be led by Gavin from RSPB Scotland, Phil from Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands and members of the NTS Ranger team. During the training we will also hear about and possibly visit some of the habitat management work the team have been undertaking for Willow tit on the reserve.
Please come prepared with warm clothing as the pace of the walk is slow with multiple stops. We recommend sturdy shoes as some of the terrain is uneven (walking boots/wellies ideal, but trainers adequate).
Training spaces are limited so book your spot now and get ready for a spring of searching for this inconspicuous yet wonderful little bird.
Maximum distance walked = 1 mile.
The event is ticketed - As we only have limited capacity. If you have booked and are no longer able to attend, please contact [email protected] to cancel and re-release your ticket.
This event is delivered through a collaboration of D&G Woodlands, RSPB, NTS and Loch Ken Trust.
