Smart Cities Conference 2025

Thursday 18. September at 10:00 - 16:00

Zinātņu māja, Latvijas Universitātes Akadēmiskais centrs, Rīga

How is Riga developing sustainable mobility solutions that are not only convenient and accessible, but also protect human health and the environment? How can a city ensure effective mobility during times of crisis, when traditional solutions are no longer sufficient and artificial intelligence plays an increasingly vital role?

🌍 For the fourth consecutive year, the Smart Cities Conference will bring together innovation experts, municipal representatives, researchers, students, residents, and other stakeholders to explore, discuss, and share experiences on how to create a human-centered urban environment that meets today’s challenges. This year’s conference will focus on sustainable urban planning, mobility, and public safety, with special emphasis on the role of technology and citizen engagement in shaping the cities of the future. The program will particularly highlight solutions for crisis scenarios and explore the potential of artificial intelligence integration in urban governance.

Sustainable mobility and a human-centered approach to city planning are not just buzzwords, they are necessities with growing need for modern cities. 🚲🚍 By shifting daily travel habits and moving away from private automobiles toward more environmentally friendly transport options, we can improve air quality, reduce traffic, and create an urban environment where people feel safe and comfortable. But how can these changes be effectively implemented? What incentives can encourage residents to adopt these changes in their daily lives? And can the 15-minute city concept become a reality in Riga?

🚨 Urban resilience in times of crisis is becoming one of the most critical aspects of city governance, especially as emergencies today can be technological as well as geopolitical. How can a city’s infrastructure respond to sudden disruptions?
How is public awareness and evacuation ensured when communication systems fail or digital networks are compromised? Artificial intelligence offers powerful tools for risk prediction, real-time decision support, and maintaining system functionality, but how ready are we to entrust safety to algorithms? Where do ethical concerns and data security risks begin? These questions and more will be addressed at the Smart City Conference.

The Conference is organized in collaboration with: Riga Technical University (RTU) Science and Innovation Centre (ZIC), University of Latvia, Riga City Council, Innovation movement VEFRESH and other partners. The event is held as part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) innovation community EIT Urban Mobility, and is supported by the mobile technology company Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT).

ℹ️ Location: House of Science, University of Latvia, Jelgavas Street 3, Alfa Auditorium. The conference will be held in Latvian and English, with translation provided.
