Tour with Mikhail Maizuls: Notre-Dame Through the Centuries

Sunday 26. April at 10:00 - 12:00

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The Cathedral on the Island: Notre-Dame Through the Centuries

Since the early Middle Ages, two forces converged on the Île de la Cité — the secular and the sacred. Here stood the palace of rulers, from Roman governors to French kings, and rose Paris’s main cathedral, where the bishop served.

The Gothic Notre-Dame, founded in the 12th century, simultaneously preserves traces of the Middle Ages and bears the marks of later eras. The island itself, however, has changed even more: its current appearance was shaped in the 19th century, during the city’s sweeping reconstruction.

How can we imagine medieval Paris while looking at the cathedral’s facades and architectural details? How can we see Notre-Dame as the city’s medieval inhabitants once knew it?

We will walk around the cathedral, study its architecture and sculpture, search for traces of the vanished ecclesiastical quarter, explore the bridges and city life of the past — and discover where Paris’s non-Catholics once lived in the very heart of the city.

A journey through time begins here.
