One Special Day in the Academy of Fine Arts with Mikhail Maizuls
The Most Terrifying Bosch. Anatomy of a Single Work
At the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, a monumental image is preserved in which Hieronymus Bosch depicts the Last Judgment—the final chapter in the history of humankind. His interpretation of this majestic subject is strikingly different from the countless versions painted by other artists of the 15th and 16th centuries. In this space, there are almost no saved souls. Before us unfolds a world entirely consumed by Hell.
Here Bosch is at once a preacher and a landscape painter, a surrealist and a satirist. How is power organized in his underworld? How did marginal illustrations from medieval manuscripts turn into figures of nightmare? Why are there so many armed characters, and which saints appear on the outer sides of the wings? Let us look closely at a single triptych and study the vocabulary of Bosch’s imaginary world.
