Did the ancient Greeks experience depression? Why was melancholy understood as a condition of the body in some historical periods, while in others it was seen as a manifestation of sin? What does it mean to live in a world where the way we explain human suffering can determine whether someone receives treatment, is offered comfort, or is simply told to pull themselves together?
During this talk, we’ll explore how depression has been understood and treated throughout history. We’ll discuss where the line lies between illness and the natural experience of sadness or grief, what we’ve learned over the past 2,500 years, what “Vitamin P” is, and which historical beliefs continue to shape how we perceive ourselves and others today.
The talk will be led by Olga Movchan, a psychotherapist, supervisor, and trainer in Gestalt therapy.
