THE DEVILS Film Screening

Ken Russell | 1971 | UK USA | 111 minutes

Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles.

THE DEVILS is screening at FOMO Secret Cinema as part of our "Banned Film Festival" presenting films from across the globe that have been subject to censorship.

THE DEVILS faced some of the most severe censorship in British film history. The UK demanded major cuts to scenes involving sexuality, religious violence, and mass hysteria, and the uncut version remained suppressed for decades. Several countries banned the film outright, and distributors in the United States also restricted access to certain versions due to public pressure.

Ken Russell’s filmmaking pushes his signature style to extremes without losing focus. The production design by Derek Jarman is stark and unforgettable, and Oliver Reed delivers one of his most intense and layered performances. The film’s energy, scale, and uncompromising vision make it a standout of 1970s British cinema.

THE DEVILS examines the dangers of political and religious power. Its themes of hysteria, persecution, and institutional corruption feel as urgent now as they did on release. The film’s artistic ambition and cultural impact have only grown over time.
