Full Moon Ragas by Krista Citra Joonas & Arno Kalbus

'Raga' means "that which colours the mind". In Indian classical music, it is a structured harmony, a pattern of melody that a musician uses as a basis for improvisation to create music to elevate the minds of listeners.

It is one of the oldest forms of world and classical music, still based on the oral tradition, where knowledge is transmitted directly from master to student, primarily through listening.

Traditionally, musicians do not follow a preset program but play a variety of ragas that are inspired by the moment. However, the selection of ragas is not arbitrary: certain ragas correspond to a certain time of day, state of mind and / or aesthetic preference.

Raga players are appreciated according to the same criteria that are considered important for jazz improvisations: good improvisation skills as well as good knowledge of traditions. Both musical traditions admire the ability of a musician to interpret a familiar and habitual in a new light. The greatest appreciation is given to the ability to respect the integrity of a given raga through a deeply personalized approach.

At the beginning of the concert, Kriya Yoga master Ingvar Villido will guide meditation to tune our minds to fully experience the depth of the ragas.

PERFORMERS:

KRISTA CITRA JOONAS studied saxophone and Western classical music at Estonian and Swiss academies, then she turned to the East and has been studying Indian classical music and bansuri (bamboo flute) at Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia in Mumbai for 14 years. Krista has participated in many ensembles and collaborated with many great musicians both in Estonia and abroad. www.kristajoonas.com

ARNO KALBUS began studying North Indian tabla in 2002 with Brian Melvin, an expert in jazz and world rhythms. His studies have also led him to Nepal and Northern India, where he has studied with the local masters. Known as the drummer of Bombillaz, Arno has collaborated with many great musicians, including Tõnis Mägi, Villu Veski, Siiri Sisask, Robert Jürjendal, Brian Melvin, Raho Langsepp, Andres Mustonen, Chalice and others. He has also accompanied Indian classical musicians visiting Estonia on the tabla.
