SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS Parajanov Film Screening (Eng subs)

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Sergei Parajanov | 1965 | USSR | 1h37m | Ukrainian language with English subtitles

Much like his epic THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES, Parajanov's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS abandons conventional narrative in favor of ritual, color, and movement. He transforms a tragic love story into a cinematic folk tapestry, drawing on Hutsul traditions to create a film that feels closer to myth than realism.

Ivan and Marichka fall in love despite a blood feud between their families. When death separates them, Ivan drifts through adulthood haunted by memory, unable to return to ordinary life. The plot is simple, but Parajanov’s camera refuses simplicity. It spins, floats, and plunges through ceremonies, dances, and funerals, making the landscape and customs inseparable from the characters’ inner lives.

The film marked a radical break from Soviet realism and announced Parajanov as one of cinema’s great visual poets. Its reception established it as a cornerstone of Ukrainian cinema and a key influence on experimental filmmaking worldwide. SHADOWS remains a rare example of folklore rendered with avant-garde intensity. It's that kind of special visual feast that has to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated.
