Celebrating 33 years of excellence in Church Music

Schola Cantorum is a mixed choir (SATB) from Sacred Heart Church in Sacramento, California. The all-volunteer ensemble, founded in 1992 by Donald Kendrick, Music Director of Sacred Heart Church, sings each Sunday at the 11 AM liturgy and for special feasts throughout the liturgical year.

The term Schola Cantorum (School for Church Song) has a very ancient origin, dating back to the fourth century when choirs were formed with a view to the presentation of polyphony and inspiring liturgical music.

Community Partnerships & International Ambassadors
Sacred Heart's Schola Cantorum has appeared in concert with members of the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, and has been featured in the Sacramento Area Bach Festival and the 1999 Western Division Conference of the American Guild of Organists. They have been heard on broadcasts and tours in the United States, Canada, Spain, England, Austria, and Italy. The all-volunteer choir is composed of people of various ages and diverse interests who are drawn together for the sake of making beautiful music on a weekly basis. Schola Cantorum rehearses weekly on Wednesday evenings (7:00 PM to 9:15 PM) Schola has toured internationally having completed a performance tour of Austria in July 2009 with concerts in Vienna, Graz and Salzburg followed by a return to the Vatican to sing at the Papal Audience and on the Great Altar of St. Peter's in 2013. Schola recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a performance tour to Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, and Prague in June 2017.

Dr. Donald Kendrick is Director of Music at Sacramento's Sacred Heart Church and the Founder of Schola Cantorum and Vox Nova. Over the past 25 years, he has led Schola on national tours to Canada and Europe, where the choir performed in England, Spain, Austria, and Italy. Schola has had the privilege of performing for two popes at the Vatican: 2007 - Pope Benedict. 2013 - Pope Francis.

Kendrick is also Co-founder and past Artistic Director of the Sacramento Children's Chorus and Chorale, the founding Conductor of the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, and Professor Emeritus - Director of Choral Activities - at Sacramento State University, where he conducted the Chamber Choir, the Concert Choir, and the University Chorus for 33 years. At Sacramento State, he also directed the Graduate Degree Program in Choral Conducting, which he initiated in 1986. His Sacramento State Choirs have performed in the United States, Europe, and Canada and have appeared on an international telecast at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Canada. He is celebrating 33 years as Music Director of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Sacramento, California, where he continues to conduct Schola Cantorum and Vox Nova, a Men’s Choir that leads the 9:30 AM liturgy each Sunday throughout the year.
