Made in collaboration with storied illustrator Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy), Oshii’s lyrical animated allegory, rich in Biblical allusions and parsimonious in spoken dialogue, follows a young girl traveling through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic cityscape, placing all of her hopes for the future in her most treasured possession: an egg that she fervently believes will eventually hatch an angel, soon to draw unwanted attention from the boy who becomes her lone companion. A work of bewildering beauties and insoluble hermeneutic mysteries, upon its release Angel’s Egg cemented Oshii’s reputation as the author of frustratingly “difficult” OVA anime works, much to his professional disadvantage, though its reputation has only towered higher with each passing year, raffirmed by a new 4K restoration of the film supervised by Oshii himself.
In addition, we invite everyone to visit the exhibition, On Fragile Grounds. Sirje Runge and Light, at the Kai Art Center on the same day. Sirje Runge is one of the central figures of Estonian postwar art. The exhibition traces Runge’s lifelong exploration of light, color, and perception, from her geometric experiments of the 1970s to recent large-scale projects, and reconstructs her pioneering teaching practice. If you visit both the cinema and the exhibition on the same day, you will receive a discount (15/10).
There is a lecture before the screening, starting 5pm, however the lecture will be held in Estonian. Screening starts at 6pm.
