Reading and writing are essential tools for navigating an understanding of the world and storytelling in its myriad forms is the foundation of understanding oneself. When you commit an idea to paper it exists more concretely than as a thought and can then be interrogated for its truthfulness. In this workshop we will look at several brief memoiristic texts and then work through writing prompts that focus on the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. I hope to cultivate an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing work and benefits from some of the excitement that comes from exchange. Writing can be pleasurable, clarifying, boring, vulnerable and a million other things but my wish is for workshop participants to leave with the confidence of knowing that writing is a tool they can access at any time. Please bring a notebook and something to write with. No prior experience with writing is needed to participate!
The workshop is led by Hanan Mahbouba, a writer, artist, and teacher who works with themes of post-migration and diasporic cultural legacy. She’s interested in building informal archives and how cultivating them can diversify dominant mainstream narratives.
Duration: 2 hours
The workshop is facilitated in English by Hanan Mahbouba
