MATADOR Almodovar Film Screening

FOMO Secret Cinema

Pedro Almodóvar | 1986 | Spain | 102 minutes

Presented in the original Spanish audio with English subtitles.

MATADOR is screening at FOMO Secret Cinema as part of our "Banned Films Week" festival presenting films from across the globe that have been subject to censorship.

MATADOR links sex and death in a way regulators were not willing to allow in the 1980s. It proved problematic for broadcasters across Europe due to its mix of eroticism and violence. Spanish and French networks refused to show it, and UK television avoided it for years.

The film shows a young Almodóvar gaining confidence in his style. His signature colours are strong, the staging is precise, and the lead performances from Assumpta Serna and Antonio Banderas carry real intensity. MATADOR sits at a turning point in his early career and marks his shift into darker and more complex themes.

MATADOR helped shape modern Spanish cinema by blending melodrama, thriller tension, and psychological detail with purpose. It still feels fresh and bold by today's standards.
