Lost in Translation?
Finding and Losing Ourselves in Another Language

Do we remain the same person when we begin living in another language?

Join us for Lost in Translation?, a lecture as part of IDENTITY by Dilogia, a season exploring what makes us who we are.

Living in another language is about more than finding the right words. Sometimes, things that once came naturally — making a joke, expressing feelings, or simply having a conversation — suddenly become more difficult. Yet a new language can also open up unexpected possibilities, allowing us to express ourselves differently, build relationships, and even discover new sides of our identity.

During the lecture, we'll explore how language influences our sense of self, why we might behave differently in different languages, and whether we can have multiple linguistic versions of ourselves.

Drawing on research in psychology and linguistics, we'll examine what changes when another language becomes part of our everyday lives.

Speaker — Diana Kaiutina, a London-based researcher with a background in clinical psychology, neuroscience, and human–computer interaction. A native Russian speaker, who now lives and works in English as her second language.
