Little Red Dots: A New Mystery of the Universe

Hadar Community Center (Matnas), Haifa

In the first hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang, objects appeared in the Universe whose existence no one expected. The James Webb Space Telescope discovered them only recently, and today they are considered one of the biggest mysteries of modern astrophysics.

These objects have been dubbed “Little Red Dots”. They resemble neither young galaxies nor familiar supermassive black holes. They are too bright, too compact, and appeared too early to fit into existing models of the evolution of the Universe.

Recent studies offer an unexpected explanation: perhaps we are looking at a completely new type of cosmic objects — Black Hole Stars (“Stars with a black hole”). If this hypothesis is confirmed, they may turn out to be the missing link between the first stars, the most ancient quasars, and early galaxies, and also help resolve one of the main questions of modern cosmology — the so-called “Early Universe Crisis.”

In the lecture we will discuss:

  • What exactly the James Webb telescope saw;

  • Why “Little Red Dots” have left astrophysicists puzzled;

  • What Black Hole Stars are and why this idea sparks so much discussion;

  • How new discoveries may change our understanding of the birth of the first galaxies and black holes;

  • What questions still remain unanswered and what astronomers hope to learn in the coming years.

This is a lecture about how one unexpected discovery can change our understanding of the history of the Universe.
