In the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, God confuses human language, scattering people across the earth as they can no longer understand one another. “Confusion” is the perfect word for the beginning - for the starting point of this performance.

To know something at all, even to be allowed half a step closer, one must first listen. This performance is an invitation to listen deeply together. To hear the world anew. To notice both - what unites us and what sets us apart.

Do we all hear water boiling in the same way? Or does each of us perceive it differently? Do dogs bark in one universal language?

Language is not just words. It is a map for thinking differently, for dreaming differently, even for missing someone differently.

When a language disappears, is it only words that vanish? Or their meanings too? Do dreams, feelings and entire ways of seeing the world also disappear with it?

There’s nothing in the universe that doesn’t communicate.
— Dan Everett, linguist, anthropologist, and philosopher.

Dita Lūriņa is a Latvian actress and stage director, currently a student at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in the CPPM course. Having long believed the whole world to be theatre - or, more precisely, that theatre is the entire world, she is now learning to listen, to notice and to discover the vastness and depth that lie beyond the kid stage.

Ieva Matveja is a student of Electroacoustic Composition at EAMT, a Latvian artist, sound explorer, electronic music producer and live performer. Her passion is to notice, approach and record the sounds that shape our world: the splash of water, the resonance of a tunnel in the city, wind in the trees or footsteps in the sand.

We are on a square meter of extraordinary life diversity, a place of remarkable gatherings in wildlife. We are surrounded by pristine nature, untouched by man; the Waistland celebrates the natural wonders that have remained.

What our eyes can capture here verges on the miraculous. In its natural habitat, we witness:
sheep, lambs, grains, money, sentimental objects, votes, goats, sins, lovers, fuckers, cars, sport cars, broken household appliances.

Waistland is a vital refuge for the species that are endangered elsewhere.
In its midst, a ten-year-old girl in white tights plays the world back into coherence.

And her language has not yet been taxed by war.

Anette Pärn (2001) is an Estonian artist and semiotician working across performance art, writing, and community engagement. Her current fascinations include broken, disregarded objects and the question of how to be a normal human.
