FOMO Cinema Presents: CANNES HEAT
Summer has finally arrived, so FOMO is bringing CANNES HEAT to the big screen: a week of scandalous, divisive, sexy and seductive films that shocked audiences, split critics and turned desire into cinema history.
Federico Fellini | 1960 | Italy/France | 2h54m + 10min intermission | Presented in the original Italian audio with English subtitles
LA DOLCE VITA follows Marcello Rubini, a gossip journalist drifting through Rome’s nightlife, celebrity parties, religious spectacles, aristocratic salons and morning-after emptiness. Played by Marcello Mastroianni with immaculate exhaustion, Marcello moves through the city as both observer and participant, always close to pleasure, rarely close to meaning.
Fellini captures Rome at the moment glamour starts to rot from the inside. Anita Ekberg’s famous Trevi Fountain scene became one of cinema’s defining images, but the film around it is much colder than its reputation suggests. Behind the parties and flashbulbs sits a portrait of spiritual fatigue, media appetite and a culture learning how to worship surfaces.
The scandal was immediate. The Vatican condemned the film, conservative groups attacked it, and Italian audiences argued over whether Fellini had made a masterpiece or an insult. Its treatment of celebrity, sex, religion and moral drift made LA DOLCE VITA one of the most controversial European films of its era.
At Cannes in 1960, the jury awarded it the Palme d’Or. The outrage didn’t stop the film. It helped make it immortal. LA DOLCE VITA remains the blueprint for every film about fame, decadence and the strange emptiness that arrives after the party ends.
