THELMA AND LOUISE: Desert Visions Film Week at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi
Friday 26. June at 21:00 - 23:10
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
June 23-28 FOMO presents Desert Visions, a journey through some of cinema's most unforgettable deserts. From Australian outback nightmares and American road movies to spaghetti westerns, Soviet science fiction, spiritual quests, and stories of people searching for meaning at the edge of civilisation. These are films about vast landscapes, strange encounters, reinvention, survival, and what happens when the familiar world falls away.
VANISHING POINT
Ridley Scott | 1991 | USA | English | 2h10m
Few films have entered popular culture as completely as THELMA & LOUISE. Even people who have never seen it usually know the ending. What often gets forgotten is just how funny, charming, and exhilarating the journey is before it gets there.
Thelma and Louise begin as two friends escaping for a weekend break. One impulsive decision changes everything, and before long they're driving deeper into the American Southwest with the police, the media, and half the country trying to figure out where they're headed next.
Like VANISHING POINT, this is a film about the open road. Unlike VANISHING POINT, it's also about friendship. The joy of the film comes from watching two ordinary people slowly realise that the lives they've been expected to live are not necessarily the lives they want.
The desert becomes a place of transformation. Every mile they travel takes them further from the rules and expectations they left behind. What begins as a crime story gradually turns into something closer to a modern American myth. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are extraordinary together. Ridley Scott turns the landscapes of the American Southwest into some of the most beautiful locations in the entire season.
Some films become classics because they're important. THELMA & LOUISE became a classic because audiences genuinely love spending time with these characters. The fact that it also happens to be one of the great road movies is a bonus.
