Artist's Choice by Paul Kuimet: "Karl's Perfect Day"

Sunday 24. May at 18:00 - 19:34

Kai Art Center, Tallinn

In the second half of May, Kai Cinema will present a film program curated by artist Paul Kuimet, created in dialogue with the exhibition "Exploded View". The films will be screened over four evenings and form part of the exhibition’s public programme.

“Karl’s Perfect Day” is a poetic, hybrid film by Thai-born artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, following a single day in the life of Berlin-based Swedish poet Karl Holmqvist. Using a Warholian observational approach, Tiravanija highlights the rhythm of everyday gestures and the quiet poetry of routine that shapes one person’s “perfect day.”

The film weaves together documentary observation and staged moments, accompanying Holmqvist through the city, his encounters with friends and artists, and his small daily rituals. Tiravanija’s minimalist aesthetic allows the viewer to decide what matters, blending reality and fiction into a reflective, open-ended portrait.

“Karl’s Perfect Day” avoids classical narrative structure or dramatic turns; its strength lies in attentive looking and the quiet poetry of everyday life.

Rirkrit Tiravanija is participating in this year’s Venice Biennale, where he leads the Qatar Pavilion’s international collaborative project — a continuation of his long-standing interest in social situations, participation, and shared spaces.

There is an introduction from the artist Paul Kuimet before the screening.

The entrance is with exhibition ticket. There are also limited number of program passes that grant access to all four screenings as well as the exhibition.
