Guided Tour of the Exhibition The Icon Chamber (ENG)

The Icon Chamber introduces visitors to one of the most fascinating collections within Narva Museum’s art holdings. The exhibition features icons dating from the 17th to the early 20th century, which entered the museum’s collection in a variety of ways. Among them are icons confiscated at the Narva customs checkpoint during attempts to smuggle them across the border, icons evacuated from Narva to Rakvere during the Second World War, and sacred objects saved from destruction during the Soviet period.

A distinctive feature of the exhibition is that outstanding examples of icon painting and rare iconography are displayed alongside more modest icons produced far from major centres of icon painting. Today, such works are of particular value and are usually found in private collections. Also worthy of special attention are cast icons and crosses made in Old Believer workshops and decorated with enamel, as well as a large double-sided altar cross of a type found in Estonian Orthodox churches in the last quarter of the 19th century.

We invite you to view the icons from a cultural and historical perspective.
