Dating back to the Bronze Age, hedges evolved as farmers cleared land, becoming stock-proof, windproof boundaries that also yielded food and materials. It's estimated that 40% of UK hedges (95,000 miles) are ancient and or species rich.
But our hedges are decreasing! We need to redouble our hedge laying and management efforts.

Join Woodman & Hedger Edward Kyrke on a fun and accessible day course. This will be an introduction to hedge-laying and management techniques, discussing both the establishment of new hedges and how to bring your existing hedges back to life.
We will learn about traditional hedgerow management, the origins, techniques, the tools used, the regional variations in style, the choice and distribution of wood and methods of securing the cut hedge and good site husbandry.

Event starts at 10am and runs to 3pm. Tools provided. Please bring your own lunch, gloves and suitable outdoor clothing.

The event will include use of sharp tools, and working with the hedges includes contact with thorns. All hedging equipment provided.

Event hosted thanks to support from The South of Scotland Beekeeping Association. (Note: event is near an apiary area, albeit during a period of dormancy).

Registered Attendees will receive full joining info 48 hours before the event.

This event is part of the Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands spring programme of events, made possible thanks to support from the Solway Coast & Marine Project (SCAMP), using funds from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Number of tickets limited to ensure best possible experience for all. If you have booked but become unable to attend, please contact [email protected] and we will re-release your ticket.
