Vivita / Lahenduste Laboratoorium invites all children and young people aged 9-18 to participate in the Japanese traditional event "Setsubun (節分)"
_

Setsubun is the event to pray for our happy and healthy life.
According to the old lunar calendar of Japan, February 3rd is the day before the first day of spring. To ward off illness and misfortune, on this day Japanese families scatter roasted soy beans inside their homes and out of every window and door with saying "Oni-wa-soto, Fuku-wa-uchi! (鬼は外、福は内!)", meaning "Devils out! Happiness in!
This is called "Mame-maki" (豆まき, Mame means beans, maki means throwing away.) And people eat beans as numbers as their age.

Also we eat "Ehoumaki (恵方巻き)" that is thick sushi roll with 7 good luck ingredients. When we eat it, we must face the year's lucky direction (West-southwest in 2025) and close your eyes, make a wish, eat the roll uncut, without speaking.
Some people decorate their house entrances with sardine heads and holly branches. They want to protect their houses from the oni.

In this event, you can experience the followings:

  • Making origami beans box
  • Let's try Mame-maki!
  • Cooking Ehoumaki sushi roll together
  • Eating Ehoumaki sushi roll with facing the year's lucky direction without speaking together

Let's enjoy Japanese Setsubun culture together!
