Kintsugi (金継ぎ) is Japanese traditional technique or art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with natural lacquer called Urushi (漆), tree sap grows in Japan.
Japanese Kintsugi is a very slow, step by step, kind of long process with understanding about the unique character of Urushi lacquer, and it takes at least 2-3 months to complete all steps and process.
In this class, you can learn about the basics of Japanese Kintsugi and try some different steps with getting used to know about the unique and fascinating character of Urushi. You can participate from 1 time but participating multiple times will deepen your understanding and experience. If you would like to understand and get the experience of all basic steps of Japanese Kintsugi, recommended to participate at least 5 times.
The philosophy behind Kintsugi is to highlight the beauty in imperfection including Wabi-Sabi (侘び寂び) spirit and to see the breakage as a part of the object's history and character, also deep appreciation for nature being. This spirituality of Kintsugi from Japan and slow work with your own hands and sense may give you a new perspective for your life and current fast-paced world.
