This unique social gathering brings together fascinating people to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of E.T.A. Hoffmann. Drawing on the rich imaginative world of one of the great figures of Romanticism, the event presents Hoffmann’s legacy through a variety of genres and perspectives, weaving together music, literature, conversation, and playful interaction into an immersive experience.
Throughout the historic Poska House, multiple activities will take place simultaneously in different rooms. Guests are free to wander between spaces at their own pace, enjoying musical moments, interactive experiences, informal discussions, and refreshments, which are all inspired, in one way or another, by Hoffmann and his work.
The evening’s performers include sopranos Elina Nechayeva and Ksenia Rossar, pianist Kristi Kapten, violinist Kristel Kiik, and cellist Andres Metspalu. The programme features music by Hoffmann himself, works inspired by his writings by composers such as Schumann, Offenbach, and Delibes, as well as excerpts from music described within Hoffmann’s novels.
Alongside his career as a jurist, Hoffmann was a passionate writer, composer, theatre practitioner, and music critic. This remarkable breadth is reflected in his artistic output, which ranges from fantastical fiction and Gothic tales to music criticism infused with autobiographical elements. His work is marked by originality, imagination, and a fearless spirit of experimentation. One of Hoffmann’s signature techniques was the blending of reality and fantasy—a quality that will also permeate the atmosphere of the salon.
Set in the warm and inviting surroundings of a residential space, the evening’s thematic activities are designed to encourage natural and lively social interaction. Inspired by music and literature, the conversations and experiences are at once universal and distinctive, offering countless moments of recognition, discovery, and connection. To make the most of the social aspect of the event, guests are encouraged to attend with a companion or group of friends.
The language of presentations and conversations will alternate between Estonian and English, depending on the participants and the context.
