Performed as a solo piece, this phsychological thriller is an adaptation of the classic Swedish novel DR GLAS.
Set in Stockholm in 1900 the story revolves around Dr. Glas's internal struggles after he becomes infatuated with one of his patients, Helga Gregorius, a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage with an older clergyman. When Helga confides that her husband forces himself on her, Dr. Glas contemplates taking drastic action to help her, leading to a series of morally complex decisions.
The story scandalized Swedish society with its hints at the validity of abortion and euthanasia. Despite that it became an iconic piece of Scandinavian literature and has been adapted for theatre all over Northern Europe.
Jeffrey Hatcher adapts the novel and keeps its complexity and surprising humor intact.
