The 24 Elders of Umberto Eco
In Paris, there is a museum few people know about – the City of Architecture and Heritage. It houses an extensive collection of casts of medieval portals and sculptures from all over France.
In just a few hours, you can embark on an expedition through dozens of monasteries and cathedrals. Explore the distinctive sculpture of Languedoc, Provence, Burgundy, and Auvergne; marvel at the 24 Elders of the Apocalypse from Moissac, the demons of Conques, the predators of Souillac, the kings of Chartres, and the Foolish Virgins of Strasbourg.
We will start with Umberto Eco’s description of the monastery in The Name of the Rose, examine which real monuments inspired his imaginary abbey, and then embark on a sculptural journey across France, discussing the structure of Romanesque and Gothic portals.
Dive into the mysteries of medieval France and its art!
