Brain Tricks: False Memories, Forgotten Passwords and Songs Stuck in Your Head

Memory is one of the most mysterious functions of the brain. It makes us who we are, yet it works in rather unusual ways: we easily remember the names of TV show characters or advertising slogans, but completely forget passwords and important dates. Why does this happen—and is there anything we can do about it?

In this lecture, we’ll explore how memory works on different levels: from the formation of connections between neurons to the relationship between memory and other cognitive functions, attention, and perception.

We’ll talk about:

  • how new memories are formed in the brain;

  • which brain structures are responsible for memory formation—and whether we could live without them;

  • whether it’s possible to “plant” false memories in someone’s mind;

  • why having a perfect memory can actually be a problem;

  • where the pieces of the night disappear after wild parties;

  • how childhood photos and advertising materials can influence our memories;

  • and how psychologists test memory using clever experiments.

We’ll examine memory from different perspectives—from neuroscience to cognitive psychology—and discover how to remember more information.
