Asphodel Meadows is a site-specific work that, at its heart, is about the seagrass meadows of the Baltic Sea and a hidden sorrow that has not been grieved. The work was born out of a need to create space for sorrow, a need to look at the sea, a need to look in the sea. The performance entwines its audience in eelgrass, gives time for premonitions, and offers space for hidden sadness.

“For there to be red algae whose embrace encircles one
For there be reeds whose interstices to inhabit for some years, even for one year
To switch off, to be inactive, for a long time.
For all to be submerged.
Underwater meadows, to be sure they exist, there are meadows.
Eelgrass meadow,
it normally doesn’t bloom
but if it does the inflorescence is without tepals
they entwine, they move quickly slowly eternally around a lopsided circle,
with their spherically branching rhizomes.
And there are algaes and there are broad-nosed pipefish,
underwater meadows are in us.”

Sinna Virtanen (b. 1987) is a director, playwright, and multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki. Virtanen completed her Master’s Degree at the Finnish Theatre Academy in 2015, from the Playwright and Dramaturgy Department. Since then, she has worked in a wide variety of theatre, cinema and contemporary art projects both in Finland and internationally. Virtanen has worked extensively as a multidisciplinary artist, as a solo artist and as a part of different groups, both institutional and freelance contexts, in black and white box spaces, but also site specifically. Her works always play with notions of time and space, sitting on the boundaries, in liminal spaces, reaching into the past and the future, into imagination and afterlives. The works are always conceived in the interconnecting surfaces of different art forms.
