TIF 25 - Zine workshop: Senses of Memory

Saturday 4. October at 10:00 - 13:00

Typa, Tartu

👁️🖍️ This two-part workshop invites participants to explore personal memory through sensory reflection and creative zine-making. Led by two facilitators (Jana Ribkina and Betija Jakaite) the workshop guides participants through the emotional and artistic process of preserving a meaningful memory using writing, collage, drawing, and DIY publishing techniques.

👣 The workshop is split into two distinct but connected sessions:
🌿🧘‍♀️ Part 1: Remembering Through the Senses (led by Jana)
In this session, participants are invited to access a personal memory they wish to preserve—something tender, important, or transformative 💭✨. Using a well-known grounding technique commonly used for managing anxiety, participants will be guided to break this memory into five sensory components:

Sight – What could you see? 👀
Sound – What could you hear? 👂
Smell – What could you smell? 👃
Taste – What could you taste? 👅
Touch – What could you physically feel? 🤲

By tapping into these five senses, participants will develop rich content that captures their memory in a vivid, embodied way. This material will become the basis for their zine.

🛠️📘 Part 2: Building the Memory Zine (led by Betija)
In the second session, participants will transform their sensory reflections into a physical zine. Betija, who brings deep experience in alternative publishing and visual storytelling, will introduce participants to a variety of zine structures and techniques. Each participant will construct a five-part zine—one part per sense—using materials and mediums of their choice: writing, collage, drawing, photography, and more .
This session will emphasize experimentation, personal expression, and the power of handmade storytelling. Participants will leave with a tactile, multi-sensory zine that encapsulates and preserves a piece of their past.
Participants are encouraged to bring newspaper or printed photos if they’d like to include them in their "Senses of memory" zine.
