Nothing hits harder than life – as they say – and the series of bloody-knuckle bouts leading up to the release of “Yours, With Malice” pushed Youth Code into deep introspection about who they are, what they’ve accomplished, and where they’re headed next.
“I think a lot of people’s stories during the pandemic were about self-reflection, but the ironic thing here is we were already in a state of reemergence and re-imagination of self before the rest of the world was forced to do it,” says Ryan George, pensively.
The grand irony is that during that time set aside for self, the wolves came out — legions of soundalikes swarming like vultures over the assumed corpse of modern EBM’s high court. But the joke’s on them: Youth Code spent those years of reflection brewing something far more potent. Yours, With Malice stands as their most intricate, well-crafted, and bloodthirsty release to date.
While some elements of “Yours…” draw from classic ’90s influences — such as Nine Inch Nails’ Broken/Fixed duality and Ministry’s untouchable middle era (The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste), alongside acts like Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire, and Portion Control — the core attack of the Los Angeles-based duo remains as uncompromising as ever.
What has evolved is Youth Code’s attention to detail and their razor-sharp focus on execution in songwriting — qualities that can only emerge from over a decade of experience.
