WRONG COPS

WRONG COPS is Quentin Dupieux at his most juvenile, abrasive and completely committed to the bit. Set in a dystopian future LA, the film follows a group of spectacularly corrupt police officers who spend their days dealing drugs, abusing civilians, making terrible music and behaving like the last people who should ever be handed a badge.
Dupieux has never been interested in making films with conventional plot beats or structures, and WRONG COPS barely pretends otherwise. The film unfolds episodically around a series of connected events. The humour is deliberately flat, strange and occasionally unpleasant, which is exactly where Dupieux tends to operate best.
The cast is a major part of the fun. Mark Burnham plays Officer Duke, a cop who sells marijuana hidden inside dead rats, while Eric Wareheim appears as one of his equally useless colleagues. Marilyn Manson turns up as a bullied teenager, completely against type, and the supporting cast includes Steve Little, Ray Wise and Grace Zabriskie.
The film also reflects Dupieux’s other career as the electronic musician Mr. Oizo. His music is woven directly into the film, with characters obsessing over terrible electronic tracks and behaving as though producing bad music is a matter of genuine artistic importance. That overlap between filmmaking, sound and absurd performance is central to Dupieux’s work.
WRONG COPS is probably not the film I'd recommend as someone’s first introduction to Quentin Dupieux. RUBBER, REALITY or INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE are perhaps easier entry points, but for anyone already familiar with his particular sense of humour, this is Dupieux with no filter.
