Guest performance by the wee dance company of the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater in Görlitz-Zittau
by Marko E. Weigert und Dan Pelleg

Dying in solitary confinement without having had a trial for insulting the government - would anyone want their country to have this kind of circumstances as the norm? Surely not. Yet we still encounter people who call for so-called strong men, for "regulated conditions," even for "discipline and order." While some people wish for clear authorities, others wish for the return of the GDR or USSR, and others even downplay the era of National Socialism. Again and again, people fall for the apparently charismatic lure of despots and dictators. What is so attractive about authoritarian regimes, even fascist ideas, that we simply cannot shake the desire for the firm hand or the strong state?
Erich Fromm and Theodor W. Adorno believed to have identified a type of person who craves abusive, oppressive-submissive relationships: the "authoritarian personality," who admires strength, approves of conformity and hierarchy, and glorifies violence, who condemns individuality and despises sensitivity and self-reflection.
Join us on a riveting search for traces of the conflict that may lie dormant in many of us: the conflict between our longing for freedom and the impulse to renounce it.

wee dance company
After 12 years as an independant dance company in Berlin, in 2011 the award-winning wee dance company became the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre Görlitz-Zittau's dance company, where it has been presenting new, original dance premières, new choreographies for the theatre's opera and musical productions, and highlights from wee dance company's repertoire that have toured throughout Germany and the world.

The guest performance is part of the Goethe-Institute’s spring programme and is organised in cooperation with the State Chancellery of Saxony. In 2023, Saxony is a partner country of the festival “German Spring”.
